Our History

Seton-La Salle Catholic High School, located in Mt. Lebanon,
Pennsylvania, was formed in 1979 by the merger of the all-boys
South Hills Catholic High School, served by the Christian
Brothers, and the all-girls Elizabeth Seton High School, founded
by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. As the largest
coeducational high school in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Seton-La
Salle serves the parishes of Pittsburgh’s South Hills and
surrounding suburbs. Initially, the school was staffed by
Christian Brothers, Sister of Charity, and lay faculty from both
original schools. The Sisters of Charity still maintain the
important presence of a religious community within the school.
The students who were part of the initial transition years
quickly adapted to their new surroundings and classmates, in
part due to the hard work of Brother Joseph Mahon, the school’s
first principal.
At Seton-LaSalle, our students learn, grow and belong in an
environment that encourages them to develop their prayer life
and commitment to our Catholic Christian traditions. This is
accomplished through monthly all-school Masses, devotion to the
Eucharist through Eucharistic Adoration, and opportunities to
participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Other prayer
services are offered throughout each year. Our students also
become involved in yearly retreats which guide them in
developing ideas concerning the Common Good, sharing their time
and talents with those less fortunate, and fostering their
personal relationship with our Lord.
Service is an important component for enriching our students’
awareness of others. Seton-La Salle provides many opportunities
for our students to become involved in service through service
clubs.
Our athletic program has produced professional athletes and
coaches in basketball and football. Together with the plethora
of clubs and the numerous opportunities for service through the
Campus Ministry Program, the extra-curriculars and athletics at
Seton-La Salle, make it truly "A Place Where Everyone Belongs."
