There are still
a few openings available in apprenticeships that are offered
by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. They start in the new
year that have openings. You must be a current junior or
senior and have a 3.0 or higher GPA. See Mrs. Caves for more
information.
Broadcast Journalism - Point Park University
The goal is to introduce students to broadcast careers, as
well as specific formats and style, students will meet
broadcast professionals and visit radio station, TV station
and a production house. The students will also get an
opportunity to know what it takes to be on-air talent or
work behind the scenes as a writer, producer, editor, etc.
Classical Dance - Pittsburgh Ballet Theater
Students will be introduced to a variety of performing arts
careers with this behind the scenes look at a professional
ballet company. The apprenticeship includes 4 workshops at
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre studios where students will
investigate the artistic, production, and administrative
components of the ballet through hands-on activities, such
as a basic ballet class (no dance experience necessary),
interviewing PBT dancers, observing rehearsal, and creating
a playbill for younger students. Students will also attend
two ballet performances.
Leadership - Point Park University
Young people can make a difference in their schools,
neighborhoods, communities and beyond with the appropriate
guidance, education and inspiration. They can be motivated
to become leaders, find their voices, and develop strategies
to create projects and see them through to completion.
Marine Biology -- Spring Session - Pittsburgh Zoo and
Aquarium
Students will explore the world of aquatic ecosystems with
the help of various professionals. From examining the
physical qualities of water to studying and caring for
living organisms in captivity and the wild, the students
will be exposed to a multitude of career possibilities in
the field of aquatic science. A fee of $32.00 payable to the
Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for a session on Riverquest is due
at the first session.
Visual Arts -- Metalsmithing-Badge Project - Society for
Contemporary Craft
All sessions are held on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. at the Society for Contemporary Craft, 2100 Smallman
Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 in the Strip District,
www.contemporarycraft.org . Students work with
metalsmith and certified art teacher, Stephanie Lind, for
six sessions. A reception for students, parents, and
teachers will be held from 6:00-7:00 pm on March 28th.

The
University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy
and the Pennsylvania School for Global Entrepreneurship
at Lehigh University, former Governor’s School programs,
are accepting applications for the 2010 summer programs.
Current high school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to
apply. The application deadline is February 15th.
