This
organization recognizes accomplishments in the areas of scholarship,
character, leadership, and service. Seton-La Salle sponsors a
chapter of the National Honor Society. Juniors and Seniors are
eligible to apply for membership when their cumulative weighted QPA
is 3.5 or above. In addition, students must exhibit leadership
skills, honorable character, as well as service to the community - a
willingness to use talents and skills for the improvement of
society. The application process occurs twice a year at Seton-La
Salle High School, in the Fall and Spring; and the judgments made by
the school committee are subjective evaluations of the quality of
the student's participation in the life of the school.
Upon becoming a member, students are required to maintain
the standard in all four areas that established his or her
membership. Through the N.H.S., the school gives recognition and
appreciation to the students and their achievements.
NATIONAL
HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION PROCEDURES:
Selection to
NHS is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply for
membership in the National Honor Society. Instead, they provide
information to be used by the local selection committee to support
their candidacy for membership.
Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty
Committee in each school on the condition of their having met the
standards for selection established. This is not an election, nor is
membership automatically conveyed simply because the student has
achieved a specified level of academic performance.
According to the constitution, only those students who have attended
the school the equivalent of one semester may be considered for
membership. Membership is open to juniors and seniors.
The faculty committee selects students who demonstrate outstanding
performance in all four criteria of NHS – scholarship, leadership,
service, and character. Students are first identified with the
pre-requisite GPA and then their performance is evaluated in the
areas of leadership, service and character.
Scholarship: Is based on a student’s cumulative GPA of a 3.5
or higher.
Leadership:
This criterion is considered highly important for membership
selection. Leadership exists in elected positions as well as outside
including effective participation in positions of responsibility in
other activities offered on campus such as athletic team captains,
section leaders in band and chorus, committee chairs in student
groups. Leadership roles in both the school and community may be
considered provided they can be verified.
Service: Service is generally considered to be those actions
undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others
without any direct financial or material compensation. In
considering service, the contributions a candidate has made to
school, classmates, and community as well as the student’s attitude
toward service are reviewed. All service references by candidates
should include verification by an adult supervisor of the activity
under consideration.
Character: We consider the positive as well as the negative
aspects of character. All judgments are free of speculation and
rumor. The NHS uses a multi-faceted definition of character known as
the 6 pillars of Character. A person of character demonstrates the
following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring and citizenship. A candidate will be able to
demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with
regard to school and community rules, guidelines and policies or be
able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate
for previous inadequacies.
