Congratulations to Sean Maxwell, '19, who has been named a National Merit Semifinalist!
Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were named in September in the National Merit Scholarship Program.Semifinalists represent less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors, and each state's number of Semifinalists is proportionate to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
Only 15,000 students advance to the Finalist level. From there, about half of the Finalists will be selected to receive one of three types of National Merit Scholarships based on their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Every Finalist competes for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships will be provided by approximately 230 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet the sponsors' specified criteria (children of the grantor's employees, residents of communities where sponsors' plants or offices are located, etc.). Additionally, about 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. Finalists who are awarded scholarships — and the Merit Scholar title — will join nearly 338,000 other distinguished young people who are also Merit Scholars.
Best of luck to Sean as he competes for this prestigious title!
