St. La Salle Tuition Assistance Fund

BACKGROUND:
St. John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the Patron Saint of Educators, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton's Sisters of Charity both made it their mission to educate the poor. This fund is intended to assist those who financially are unable to consider attending a Catholic school.

In order to extend to more students of promise, who will become our Catholic leaders in the future, this fund is established.

GUIDELINES:
All funds are restricted for distribution as follows:
  • Only students who are entering their Freshman or Sophomore year at SLS are eligible unless changing financial circumstances would qualify upperclassmen
  • Only Roman Catholic students are eligible
  • Only students who have maintained a "B" average in all subjects are eligible
  • Only students from families whose annual income does not exceed 35% (50% if more than one child) above what is determined the poverty level are eligible.
The application process is as follows:
  • Parents must submit a brief application form in early March including documentation of a) financial eligibility; b) evidence of involvement in a local parish; c) academic eligibility
  • A review committee composed of three faculty members and one administrator shall consider all applications and determine the amount of financial assistance to be provided.
  • Funds can only be applied to tuition assistance. Funds are only provided for one academic year, but a student may apply again for additional years with the same requirements in effect.
  • Awards are announced on the feast of St. La Salle, April 7.
The student receiving this award pledges to:
  • Provide 50 hours of service to the school in ways determined appropriate by the selection committee
  • Attempt to "pay back" the award received at some future date with some additional token of their appreciation (not legally binding)

The fund is to be increased each year by an appeal to alumni and/or fund raising activities. Solicited funds may not be allocated for any other purpose.

The school agrees to match the awarded amount with "tuition forgiveness" or tuition aid from other sources.
